Food from the Market

Village life has changed for Orton since the establishment of a new regular monthly market. Market days have become busy social occasions that have put vibrancy and a sense of place into the local community.

The market was originally conceived as an outlet for local producers and farmers, and to generate funds to help with the costs involved in running the village hall. Initially two volunteer co-ordinators and twenty six local producers were involved. Advice was sought from local and national organisations and a pilot scheme was started to establish how feasible the project might be.

A Scene from the MarketThe benefits have been endless. The market, with input from many local producers and farmers, gives local people a wide range of high quality produce to choose from which comes directly from the producer. Apart from environmental benefits, food is fresh, not having spent long hours being transported from elsewhere. There are added benefits for those without transport and the elderly or infirm, who may find shopping difficult. Other local businesses benefit from increased trade on market days.

The market has been very successful and now attracts 35 regular stall holders. This generates an income from stall fees which goes towards the running costs of the village hall. In total £150,000pa is generated for the local economy.

This innovative project to restore Orton village market, has benefited all members of the local community. It has put back something that was once an integral part of village life but which sadly, throughout many parts of the country, has gradually been lost. Orton has proved that all is not lost and with imagination and the will of local people for a project to succeed, almost anything can be achieved.
