A shelter standing on Scout Scar in the Parish of Underbarrow, built to commemorate the Coronation of George V, had fallen into a state of disrepair and was in urgent need of restoration. The main priority was the domed roof which was called the 'mushroom' because of its unusual shape. This needed replacing along with the panoramic map showing the mountains and surrounding Lakeland fells, which had become difficult to decipher. The masonry was also in a poor state of repair and the whole shelter was in need of re-painting.
Due to efforts of
the local community, both professionals and volunteers, Underbarrow opened
its new Mushroom Four-way Shelter on Scout Scar on June 3rd 2002, the
Golden Jubilee Year of the granddaughter of George V, Queen Elizabeth
II.
